Braid Aftercare
Braid Aftercare - Keep Your Style Looking Fresh
Getting your braids done is only half the job. How you look after them determines how long they last, how healthy your natural hair stays underneath, and how good they look in week six versus week one. Here's everything you need to know about maintaining your style after an AdorableLook appointment.
Night Care - The Most Important Habit
Wrap your hair every night in a silk or satin scarf, or sleep on a silk pillowcase. Cotton pillowcases create friction that causes frizz, dryness, and premature unravelling at the edges. A silk scarf takes ten seconds to put on and adds weeks to the life of your style. This is non-negotiable if you want your braids to last.
Scalp Moisturising
Your scalp still needs moisture even when your hair is in a protective style. Use a lightweight oil - jojoba, argan, or a dedicated braid spray - and apply it directly to your scalp every 2–3 days. Don't overdo it with heavy products as these can cause buildup. Focus on your parts and edges.
Washing Your Braids
Contrary to what some people think, you can and should wash your braids. We recommend washing every 2–3 weeks using a diluted sulphate-free shampoo or a braid-specific cleanser. Apply it directly to your scalp, massage gently, and rinse thoroughly. Squeeze the water out gently - don't rub. Allow your braids to air dry fully before wrapping or tying up.
Edges and Hairline Care
Your edges are the most vulnerable part of your hair in any protective style. Avoid tight updos that pull at your hairline. Use a light edge cream to keep them smooth and moisturised. If you notice any tension or soreness at your hairline, loosen the style and give your edges a break.
How Long Should You Keep Your Braids In?
Knotless braids and box braids: 6–8 weeks maximum. Faux locs and crochet styles: 4–6 weeks. Cornrows: 2–4 weeks. Boho and goddess braids: 4–6 weeks. Leaving any protective style in beyond these timeframes can lead to matting, breakage, and damage to your natural hair. When in doubt, take them out.
Between Appointments
Give your natural hair a break between protective style appointments. Wash, deep condition, and let your hair breathe for at least a week before installing a new style. This protects your hair's long-term health and keeps it strong for future appointments.
